  • Product Information

  • Vetiver is famous all over the Indian Subcontinent. People may not understand it since many of them are unfamiliar with this name. Instead, it is popularly known “Khus” or “Khus-Khus” and it is extensively used in the perfumes, cooling, food and beverage industries.

The botanical name of vetiver is Vetiveria Zizanoides or Andropogon Muricatus. This grass has a very pleasant, mild, earthy, and musky smell which has a cooling effect on the body and the mind. The dried grass and its roots are used to thatch the side panels of the water based room and window coolers since it cools and adds fragrance to the moist air.

It is also used to thatch roofs of earthen houses and mattresses. It is also used as curtains on doors and windows, which, apart from cooling and scenting the rooms, keeps insects away. That is why its demand rises excessively during the summer, particularly in humid countries like India and its neighbors.

  • Popular Uses of Vetiver Essential Oil

    • Use as a massage oil to promote circulation and calm emotions.
    • Take a warm bath with a few drops of Vetiver essential oil for deep relaxation.
    • Diffuse with Lavender and Wild Orange to calm emotions and lessen stress.
    • Use a toothpick to help get the desired amount out of container if Vetiver is too thick to get out of the bottle. A little goes a long way.
    • The earthy, slightly lemony fragrance is said to have been used for centuries in India. Dab on your wrists or neck. Try blending it with a floral aroma like Ylang Ylang or Clary Sage, or even a citrus like Bergamot.
    • Its cleansing properties help gently cleanse the face. Test for sensitivity and mix one drop in 3 drops of coconut oil and apply to a freshly washed face.

Diffuser blend: 5 drops Lemon with 3 drop Vetiver in diffuser for a fresh rainfall felling.

Sleepy Time Salve: Mix 1/2 cup coconut essential oil with 1/4 cup beeswax and heat until thoroughly mixed. While cooling, mix in 10 drops Vetiver and Lavender essential oils.

PH Balancing Deodorant: Combine 1 cup of water with one tbsp vinegar and 1 TB baking soda. Mix thoroughly then add 10 drops each of Vetiver and Wild Orange essential oil. Pour into spray bottle and spritz for use.

Anti-inflammatory uses: Vetiver essential oil can help to provide relief from a variety of inflammatory complaints. Vetiver oil cools and soothes and can be applied topically to ease inflammation of the joints and the skin and is especially useful to those with rheumatoid arthritis and skin inflammation caused by wind and sunstroke. It is also beneficial in easing inflammation of the nervous and circulatory systems.

Scarring and other Skin Blemishes: Vetiver essential oil has cicatrisant properties, which basically means that it can help to promote the healing of scarring and other marks on the skin. As well as accelerating the disappearance and eradication of scar marks, it also stimulates the growth and production of new tissue.

Insect repellant: Depending on where you live and the time of year then insects like mosquitos might present a real problem. It is rainy season where I live and as silly as it sounds, the mozzies (mosquitos) can really affect your quality of life by preventing you from sitting in the garden or keeping you awake with their incessant buzzing. The good news is that vetiver essential oil can help to repel mosquitos and other annoying insects.

  • Room freshener: You do not have to use essential oils for their therapeutic properties alone and while it is well known for its grounding properties, the scent alone can help your house smell nice and fresh and get rid of any nasty odors like those leftover from tobacco and cooking.
